Iceland is a mountainous island between Europe and North America. The name of the country can be misleading, only 10% of Iceland is covered with glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and an infinite number of geothermal hotspots. Iceland is generally a very expensive place to visit.
Iceland is a stunningly beautiful place if you enjoy strange and desolate landscapes. Because it is so close to the Arctic circle, the amount of daylight varies dramatically by season. The sun sets briefly each night in June, but it doesn't get fully dark before it comes back up again. In the March and September equinoxes, days and nights are of about equal length, as elsewhere in the world. If you go in December, it's almost 20 hours of darkness.
It's one of the Nordic countries, and therefore culturally part of Europe. The original inhabitants are Vikings.
Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland. It is the most western capital of Europe and the world's most northern capital. It's the largest and most important city of Iceland.
It is the centre of culture and life of the Icelandic people, and is one of the focal points of tourism in Iceland. Reykjavik is known for its vibrant nightlife. The city centre is a very small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, with good shopping, dining and drinking.
